Is it legal/ethical to ask a patient checking in for an outpatient service at the hospital if they have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS? Our hospital is wanting us to ask that at registration. To me it's unecessary and just rude. We already as if there is a needle stick can we test for infectious disease. That seems sufficient. So I'm wondering is that even legal to ask that.

I'm not sure about being leigle but its ethical i think. But it might depend on the person if i was asked i wouldn't care but that's just me.

It seems to be a logical step in treating a patient, since it would give the hospital the information needed to protect the patient from exposure to others who may be carrying contagious diseases that a person with a compromised immune system should not be exposed to. After all ,a hospital is full of sick people, and also they may want to know in order to protect the staff. I'd suggest that people try not to take everything personally since we all need to get along and try not to be self-centered
