mostly i think they are not educated enough about the prevention and how u can contract aids. second some of their beliefs like having sex with a vergin is supposed to cure aids or stop the spread of aids (which is not true). third some of them can't afford protection or medication to help with aids. also kids are being born with aids if their mothers are infected. i think that if they educate themselves about prevention and protection and also have people try to debug the myths about aids it might help but there will still be people out there unwilling to do any of the above so i don't know if it can be prevented but slowed down some.

Complex issue, to say the least. And too complex to fully illustrate here. Many people (not just African Americans) still hold on --sometimes subconsciously -- to the idea that HIV is a gay men's disease or an injection drug user disease. That places people at an increased risk. Poverty, socioeconomic status, lower educational levels make people more vulnerable to infection, and greatly increase the impact it has on a population. Racism and Sexism, along with Heterosexism/homophobia all can increase a person's vulnerability to HIV infection I recently attended a conference where this issue was discussed in detail and one of the biggest points brought up was: *a lack of black voices speaking out and educating their community about HIV. *The vast majority of Black Americans infected with HIV are unaware of their infection -- you can't protect yourself or your partner if you don't know your status. *70% of all Americans living with HIV are NOT in proper treatment and care What can be done? -increase awareness -volunteer with a related organization -make a donation to a related organization -TALK TO YOUR FRIENDS, NEIGHBOURS, AND FAMILY about HIV ---- Something everyone can to do to help raise awareness -demand action from your elected representatives I would check out the document: We're the One's We've Been Waiting For: The State of AIDS in Black America....and What We're Doing About It published by the Black AIDS Institute -info@BlackAIDS.org - www.BlackAIDS.org
