What year did HIV/AIDS start

What year did HIV/AIDS start?

1 :
Well, i don't know the exact year but i know it started sometime in the 1980's
2 :
1981: The Beginning In 1981, the first cases of AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) were identified among gay men in the United States, acquiring the designation, GRID (Gay-Related By the end of 2003, twelve million children in Sub-Saharan Africa were orphaned by AIDS. Source: AVERT.ORG Image Source: CDC/Dr. Lyle Conrad Immune Deficiency); however, scientists later found evidence that the disease existed in the world for some years prior, i.e., subsequent analysis of a blood sample of a Bantu man, who died of an unidentified illness in the Belgian Congo in 1959, made him the first confirmed case of an HIV infection. Source: CNN In an article, "1959 and all that: Immunodeficiency viruses," by Simon Wain-Hobson of the Pasteur Institute in Nature (Volume 391, 5 February 1998, pp. 532-533), Wain-Hobson wrote: "Where did HIV [Human Immunodeficiency Virus] come from? Both of the AIDS viruses, HIV-1 and HIV-2, originated in Africa... As is often the case with microbes, a jump from one species to another is probably to blame... chimpanzees (for HIV-1) and sooty mangabeys (for HIV-2)... When did the AIDS epidemic begin?... the Big Bang seems to have occurred around, or just after, the Second World War. Emerging microbial infections often result from adaption to changing ecological niches and habitats." Cases of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP, a lung infection) and Kaposi's sarcoma (a rare skin cancer) were reported by doctors in New York and Los Angeles in 1981, then the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) began tracking a growing population of young men, women, and babies, whose immune systems were nearly destroyed. Late in 1982, the condition began to be referred to as AIDS. Source: American Red Cross For a few at first, their awareness of AIDS began with the publishing of a little noticed entry on page two of the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report of June 5, 1981, where a strange outbreak of killer pneumonia was spreading among gay men. Since this report, AIDS has graduated from a seemingly local phenomenon to a global epidemic. Source: CNN
3 :
No one really knows, considering how long it might have been going on quite a while before the 'official' medical community paid attention. But it was known by the mid 1980's.
4 :
The first recognized cases of AIDS where in the 1980's. Keep in mind that is just when it was recognized as a disease and not the year it originated.
5 :
it's firstly reported in 1981 in homosexual partner.
6 :
very late 70's or early 80's.
7 :
The early 80's why?

Since HIV/AIDS worldwide is primarily a HETEROSEXUAL disease, why do some insist on calling it a gay disease

Since HIV/AIDS worldwide is primarily a HETEROSEXUAL disease, why do some insist on calling it a gay disease?
I realize that in the US it was first detected in homosexuals, but it was already being passed between heterosexuals in numerous other countries and continues to be a disease that primary affects heterosexuals. To hear it called a "gay disease" makes one think that people with suspect agendas are trying to wrongfully inspire hatred and bigotry by associating the disease with a segment of the population they don't like or understand, don't you think?

Blah blah blah..... its not a hetero/homo disease..... its the worlds disease and problem... blah blah blah
2 :
your absolutely right. its all about trying to hate someone and target a particular group of people..mainly the GLBTIQ community.
3 :
many of the people that call it a gay disease, are also the ones who take three or four obscure verses from the bible and twist them to "prove" their claim that god hates gays.
4 :
Being a person living with HIV, and knowing many people with I would defiantly say it is a human disease, it now less of a problem in gay community now because we were hit the hardest at the beginning and we learned to take precautions, where as the ones who said it was a punishment from God thought that they wouldn't contact the disease and so they did not take the precautions and now its running rampant in the hetero community. So I guess God doesn't care who he punishes, what kind of God is that, not my God.

why an vaccine for HIV/AIDS is not possible.?
explain in detail if possible.and give me information for wat is aids?and all about it till u know

1 :
Aids is Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. It starts out as HIV (Human immunodeficiency virus). There are thee stages to HIV. There are case where people have been in the HIV stages for over 10 years before AIDS took over. The person gets infected and it starts to destroy their immune system. Once it has taken a toll the immune system leaving it open to opportunistic diseases that wouldn't have the chance to infect a healthy person. Once it gets to aids it means the persons immune system has completely been destroyed. There is no vaccine because scientist haven't been able to find one yet. All their attempts have fallen through.
2 :
because it weakens ur immune system and t lymphocites which take up the vacinne
3 :
I'll answer your primar question why a vaccine has proved so difficult. HIV-1 and similar retrovirii, have a remarkable (a compliment to them, bad for us in a way) ability to change their genetic make-up. Making a vaccine means exposing an organism to the pathogen, and the organism produces antigens which then recognize the pathogen. These antigens are then harvested, purified and injected into susceptible persons. Though smallpox vaccine does not actually use smallpox virus to generate antigens, but rather a close relative variola, the method works. Not so with HIV, even if a close cousing were used, each copy of the HIV virus that is made in an infected individual millions upon millions at times, is different and would eventually conquer the protection afforded by a vaccine.
4 :
What my understanding of how vaccines work there are two main types. The first is where dead microbes are injected into a person, this then causes the bodies immune system to react and build an antibody for the microbe. Antibodies work on a simple level by making shapes which fit around the microbe, thus rendering it useless. For this to work, the antibodies in a person must be identical (and made for) the dangerous microbe which is likely to infect the person. As someone mentioned, unlike bacteria, viruses (because they are not living) have a genetic code which changes regularly. This is why a new flu vaccine is bought out each in the UK. This brings me onto the second type of vaccine. The second type is where a microbe almost identical to the dangerous one is administered to the patient, although often the bacteria or such has been genetically modified so that it is not harmful. However, the bodies immune system still reacts forms an anti-body. So how does this relate to HIV/AIDs? Well, because the viruses genetic material and "shape" is changing regularly it means most vaccines which use antibodies are deemed useless. This is the same reason viruses such as the common cold have no known cure, and although vaccines can be made by the time they are, the virus has often changed to radically for these antibodies to be effective. This doesn't however mean that there is no cure for HIV/AIDs, as it is likely with up coming nanotechnology a cure may be possible. A "vaccine" could be made by manufacturing nanobots which recognize and destroy the HIV virus. Another possible way of killing a virus is through the use of a magic bullet. Magic bullets are chemicals which can travel unnoticed through the body but have the ability to destroy microbes or bacteria. The first was discovered by Paul Ehrlich and was named Salversan 606 (or scientifically known as Arsphenamine) and had the ability to kill the syphilis microbe. So although medical science offers a possible cure for the disease in the future, it could be argued that all the money which is being invested into research for a cure the disease might be better spent buying condoms and offering education to the people in the countries suffering most heavily. Hope that answered your question, maybe a bit more thoroughly than needed but ow well, knowledge is power!

When you donate blood, is it tested for HIV/AIDS

When you donate blood, is it tested for HIV/AIDS?
If you donate blood, do they test it for HIV/AIDS before they give it to someone? If you had it would they tell you? I'm specifically talking about Wisconsin...I don't know if it changes from state to state. Thank You

They are supposed too
2 :
yup its a requirement
3 :
yes it is tested.
4 :
they check it and if you have hiv/aids then they cant use it so they will inform you
5 :
Theoretically, yes; however, I have this complete and total mistrust of anything involved in Western medicine. The practitoners thereof are nothing but chemical-pushing charlatans in the vein of the mid- to late 19th century snake oil salesmen.
6 :
Yes it is.
7 :
yes it will be tested
8 :
yes they screen it for HIV and hepatitis too. as for telling you, i don't think they do they may contact your doctor and inform him. but if you are refused as a blood donor, you have a right to ask why but you are supposed to be counselled before being given the news.
9 :
Of course , they test it for HIV.
10 :
All donated blood is tested for HIV (the virus that can lead to AIDS), hepatitis C, and I think some other things as well. If you test positive for anything, the donation center notifies you. The blood is not used. If you test positive for HIV or hepatitis C, you are also notified that you are no longer allowed to donate blood.

When a doctor draws your blood while your in the hospital do they check for HIV/ AIDs?

STDs - 5 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
No not unless they're specifically testing for that purpose. If you're HIV positive, you should tell any health professional treating you though. Or if you're wanting to be tested, you need to discuss it with your doctor.
2 :
no. only if you ask them to. the only loophole to that is the Ryan White Care Act. it states that EMS personnel can find out whether they were exposed to life threatening diseases while providing care. which means if you were brought to the hospital in an ambulance and any of the EMTs were dangerously exposed to your blood or bodily fluid, they can test you for HIV/AIDS. however they would tell you when doing so.
3 :
u have to ask, smart one
4 :
Nope you have to specifically ask for it. You seem to be asking a lot of questions in the STD section so I'm assuming you should probably see a doctor and get a pap smear and get tested for STD's and make sure that you ask for a AIDS and herpes test because they don't normally test for them so you have to specifically ask for them.
5 :
in many countries yes, from which country u r?

Should people with HIV/AIDS have to notify potential employers

Should people with HIV/AIDS have to notify potential employers?
I have to write a speech and I just need some key points to talk about..
STDs - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Since you can't spread the HIV through casual contact, I would think that the only employers who have a right to know would be ones where the sharing of bodily fluids to others may be possible, such as medical, police or fire-fighting jobs. Otherwise, employers demanding to know things like that are committing a serious invasion of privacy.
2 :
Most jobs today require a pre-employment physical administered by a clinic/doctor and it includes thorough blood testing. They will find out--even if you don't tell them. Blood borne diseases can be a real problem in some work professions where injuries are likely to occur. Employers have a right to know the risks posed to other employees--because they are likely to be sued if someone else accidentally becomes infected.
3 :
NO! Someone who is HIV positive is safe from having to tell by the Disabilities Act. Anyone can refuse the pre-exams; if the future employer tells you that you have to take it, you need to have them read the Disabilities Act. By law they cannot make you. Now, they might not hire you because of it (they would tell you that you just weren't qualified or something stupid) but no notification needed.

In a Physical For a New Job are Hiv/Aids,and STD's being Checked In a Complete Blood Count and Urinalysis?
I'm Doing a Physical for a new job next week(Police Officer) and was just curious...
STDs - 4 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
for a police officer I'm sure they are checkling for those. Your health affects their overall health premiums so if it's likely that you will need medical help over and above the average amount one would need, it may be a factor in the hiring process. For a police officer, I'm surprised they haven't already asked you if you have had/or have and STD. They are usually pretty thorough in the interview process.
2 :
Yes, I̢۪d image they would check for HIV along with other health factors, don̢۪t worry you̢۪ll be ok. I wish you the best of luck. Signed, You̢۪re Good Friend. -Ryan M
3 :
A standard complete blood count(CBC) and urinalysis(UA) does not check for HIV or STDs. But: both STDs and HIV can be checked for with urine and blood obtained for a CBC and a UA. They are just different tests. In a normal doctor's visit, you should definitely be able to ask what tests they are running on the blood and urine you provide.
4 :
In USA, people can't legally be tested for HIV unless they give written consent for the test.

explain your first thoughts or reactions to the HIV/AIDS virus. What do you think about the virus?

STDs - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
My very first thought is protection. I think of ways the infected person could be protected from being exposed to other viruses. I think if ways people can protect themselves from the disease. I think about education and I want for people to be educated about this disease so we can deal with it appropriately.
2 :
It is actually more common among heterosexual couples, specifically black heterosexual couples, unlike the common thought that it is only between homosexuals. Also, it is difficult to get the virus unless you are having unprotected sex with random people or people that have not been tested. The virus doesn't scare me like it tends to scare other people, but if you know about the virus, you aren't necessarily as scared as everyone else.
3 :
I was going to die in the next 6mon. and i hated the man that did this to us? Myself and my 8th grader was studying Hiv/Aids He can showed me he bottle's and as I was a nurse I knew what the names were for.!!! You talk about why me and then why him what you did tio push him into her bed?????

STD Clinic Dubai Zack http://www.stdskin.com/ Lack of awareness, perhaps. Ethnic and genetic susceptibility to virus now under study

3 :
It's been largely the combination of lack of resources , both medical and educational, as well as the fact that some government and church institutions initially were putting out false information which was worse than no information.Poverty will mean that some entire countries won't be able to support HIV infected people, house or hospitalize them, or often even communicate education. Even when education can get spread, it may be at odds with local or national preconceptions or attitudes. Africa is many countries and many cultures, some tribal, some European and some in between, some of which have higher educational and economic resources than others; lumping all of Africa together isn't a fair representation of the problem.
4 :
rape, stupidity
5 :
HIV is a large problem in the african american community, because they still think it's a gay disease and it can't happen to them. Also, there are a lot of down low brothers. There is a stigma about being gay and black. So it goes on educated and the lack of awareness that there are gay blacks. This is made true in black music and media that it is not ok to be black and gay. That is why HIV infection in the african american community is so abundant.
6 :
I believe the number one cause is infidelity. Having mistresses is a status symbol. Often the girls are very young, so bleeding is a problem. Also there is a preference in some areas for "dry" sex, which will definitely ccause bleeding and cuts. Poverty, lack of good medical care, and the stigma of having it all add to the problem.
7 :
One issue: Lack of education about how HIV is actually transmitted/faulty beliefs: People in Africa believe that if they have HIV, and have sex with a virgin, they will be cured. This belief results in a high rate of rape of young people and rapid spread of HIV. Also, because access to medications is limited, women in Africa transmit the virus through pregnancy, delivery, and breastfeeding more often than women in the US do. (In the US, women can take meds to reduce the risk of transmission of the virus during pregnancy, they can have C-sections, and avoid breastfeeding, to further reduce risk of HIV transmission to the baby.)
8 :
Did you know Sub-sahara Africa has a different strain of HIV? Africans just love sex!!!

I work with Better Universe. Better Universe is a global online membership that generates funds to donate to world charities. They do this through sales of multi-media and a few other membership benefits that help generate funds for Better Universe and 10% of all net profits of the company are donated to world charities. Last year, we generated funds for World Vision. This year they have shifted their focuses towards UNICEF. This is just one of many ways that I show my support. I am also with ONE.org - They're a different type of organization. I guess to answer your question. Take a look at unicef.org and see what they are doing with aids prevention. It's a great start and keeps getting better. As for what you are doing, well that's just golden - to hear people reaching out like that and doing what you do. Does bring a tear to my eye. May you always keep the strong will and never-ending heart. Gob bless and take care, James P Reardon Sr.

Can you get HIV/AIDS in water parks

Can you get HIV/AIDS in water parks?
I'm going to Hurricane Harbor in July and I just had a random thought and now I'm like really curious and scared. Is it possible? That someone with HIV has an open cut and it spills into the water.
STDs - 5 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
chances are slight.
2 :
It can not transmit through water. The bacteria would basically die when they come out into the water. Only way to get it, is direct contact with the blood, and your blood. You have a cut, and HIV blood hits you, you get it. Otherwise, no way.
3 :
If you're sharing a needle and shooting up with an HIV/AIDs infected person in the bathroom or having unprotected sex in hurricane harbor with an hiv/aids infected person, then yup, you sure can. The virus can only live outside the body for a very short period of time, and places like that overdose on the water chemicals. You are NOT going to get HIV/AIDS from a water park. So put your paranoia pants back in the closet, slap on your sunscreen, and go have fun!!! :)
4 :
no.. the molecules in the water will break down the blood. If someone does get HIV, it has to be blood to blood contact. hope this helps
5 :
It is very unlikely that this could happen. The virus can live outside the body for up to 72 hours but under the right conditions. When it comes to water it is not likely. The water is often treated with enough chemicals that the virus would be killed instantly. Transmition of the AIDS virus needs direct human to human contact through fluids. To put it plainly you stand a better chance of winning the lottery than contracting AIDS

because one person gets it, and the give it to someone else either because they dont no..or maybe they just dont care, and over there sometimes they dont have the meds they need and a mother passes it on to there child, the world is cruel like that. The only way is to teach, but it wont completely stop. you cant prevent crime or racial problems thats something thats always going to happen..
2 :
It's all about money, honey! Sad but that's what it is going to take and people to teach prevention. Volunteers. And a whole lot of prayers.
3 :
Why don't we focus on fixing our own AIDS epidemic in this country first. We also have a lot of Crime and racial problems that need our attention. We need to clean our act up before we go to South America and start telling them what to do. You should not dress a wound with dirty fingers.

How do scientists theorize the creation of HIV/AIDS

How do scientists theorize the creation of HIV/AIDS?

STDs - 8 Answers

1 :
it originated in africa, I belive a man had intercourse with a monkey.
2 :
possibly from monkey strain that was something else and some dumbass human had butt sex with a monkey and messed it up for everyone....and the strain in that human mutated to something really funky as hell and then he had sex with more people and so on..........
3 :
I also heard that it originated in Africa in monkeys but that it spread to man from the consumption of the meat.
4 :
yes it was Africa, and yes it was primates/monkeys, no there was no intercourse with the monkeys, they were developing a vaccine for polio, and the HIV jumped species to humans through the first set of test inoculations, it just spread from there, the rest is history
5 :
The origin of AIDS and HIV has puzzled scientists ever since the illness first came to light in the early 1980s. For over twenty years it has been the subject of fierce debate and the cause of countless arguments, with everything from a promiscuous flight attendant to a suspect vaccine programme being blamed. So what is the truth? Just where did AIDS come from? The first recognised cases of AIDS occurred in the USA in the early 1980s (more about this period can be found on our history page). A number of gay men in New York and San Francisco suddenly began to develop rare opportunistic infections and cancers that seemed stubbornly resistant to any treatment. At this time, AIDS did not yet have a name, but it quickly became obvious that all the men were suffering from a common syndrome. The discovery of HIV, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus that causes AIDS was made soon after. While some were initially resistant to the connection (and indeed remain so today), there is now clear evidence to prove that HIV does cause AIDS. So, in order to find the source of AIDS, it is necessary to look for the origin of HIV, and find out How, When and Where HIV first began to cause disease in humans. HIV is a lentivirus, and like all viruses of this type, it attacks the immune system. Lentiviruses are in turn part of a larger group of viruses known as retroviruses. The name 'lentivirus' literally means 'slow virus' because they take such a long time to produce any adverse effects in the body. They have been found in a number of different animals, including cats, sheep, horses and cattle. However, the most interesting lentivirus in terms of the investigation into the origins of HIV is the Simian Immunodeficiency Virus (SIV) that affects monkeys. The more virulent, pandemic strain of HIV, namely HIV-1, was until recently more difficult to place. Until 1999, the closest counterpart that had been identified was SIVcpz, the SIV found in chimpanzees. However, this virus still had certain significant differences from HIV. It is now generally accepted that HIV is a descendant of a Simian Immunodeficiency Virus because certain strains of SIVs bear a very close resemblance to HIV-1 and HIV-2, the two types of HIV. HIV-2 for example corresponds to SIVsm, a strain of the Simian Immunodeficiency Virus found in the sooty mangabey (also known as the green monkey), which is indigenous to western Africa. The site im adding tells the full story of the origins of AIDS....................... Hope it helps what i wrote is an excert from it......
6 :
I've included a link to AVERT's page - "AVERT is an international HIV and AIDS charity based in the UK, with the aim of AVERTing HIV and AIDS worldwide. (AVERT website)" On their page (http://www.avert.org/origins.htm) they cover the following theories which may help answer your question! The Hunter Theory The Oral-Polio Vaccine Theory The Contaminated Needle Theory The Colonialism Theory The Conspiracy Theory
7 :
a cure for aids will be fully devolooped and released in 2007 or early 2008 no later...and at that time a lot of idiots will think they never have to use protection anymore...so what will be better letting people have the cure or letting high schoolers think we just went back to the 60's
8 :
Not tryna sound racist or discriminating or anything, but AIDS/HIV DID NOT originate in Africa (alot of ppl there have it only bcuz they don't have the proper protection or technology over there, so that's not how it started). AIDS/HIV originated from the Europeans, particularly gays. As an African-American, I am extremely offended by these idiotic answers and stupid responses. I hope that answers your question.

Can I be a paid employee... like the executive director?? How much can I pay myself and my staff?? Can this be done with grants or does the salary need to paid from fund raising and donations? What should I know about setting up a non-profit and where I can go to search for grants?? This is a much needed organization for HIV/AIDS prevention, and education in my area. I want to dedicate my life to this!

welcome to the competition!!!!! the established foundations have paid staff...you better have a good business/budget/prevention analysis/how to document/data to entice grants/fund raising targets etc.etc...its best for you to work for one and learn the business

You can find information on starting a nonprofit from The Foundation Center web site - they have information on finding funding too. http://www.foundationcenter.org. Depending on the grant, salaries for staff can be included on the budget proposal. But overhead (rent, office supplies, other bills) are often not included, or not funded sufficiently to cover actual cost of such expenditures.. Grants for overhead expenses or general operating funds are extremely difficult to find, and are very competive. You will need to do fundraising from individual or corporate donors to cover your expenses, including salaries, benefits, etc. There are quite a few national and international organizations that are working in this field. If there is such an organization in your local community you might do better to work for them rather than competing with them for whatever funding is available

You can be a paid employee, even the executive director, provided that the board of directors, which will be responsible for the organization and to whom that position would report, decide you are the best person to run the organization. You and your staff can be paid as much as the organization can afford. However, you are getting WAY ahead of yourself. First off -- do you have any experience with directing HIV/AIDS education activities? Are there many people familiar with your work in this area and who would endorse your efforts to lead such a charity? And do you have experience managing finances, creating budgets, etc.? If not, this would be a good time to volunteer with organizations addressing HIV/AIDS, so you can get a lot more experience. These web sites will give you details about starting a nonprofit organization in the USA, and most of the requirements are similar in other countries: Starting a Nonprofit Organization http://www.managementhelp.org/strt_org/strt_np/strt_np.htm Starting a Non-Profit Checklist- The Things You Must Do to Start a Nonprofit Organization http://www.ctnonprofits.org/pages/NonprofitResources/startnonprofit.asp (it's for Connecticut, but it's pretty much the same for MI) The Nonprofit FAQs http://www.nonprofits.org Before you file any paperwork, you need to get letters of endorsement from existing organizations saying this program is needed, such as hospitals, doctors, other nonprofit organizations and communities of faith, you need to have data that shows your target group is in need whatever service it is that you want to provide and that they are not served otherwise, and you need to have a draft of what your first year's budget would look like (what expenses you expect to incur, what you expect to pay staff, etc.).

Hun, you can risk getting HIV/AIDS if you have unprotected sex with someone, not by simply visiting.

Why do you think HIV/AIDS among African American is rising and how can it be prevented?

mostly i think they are not educated enough about the prevention and how u can contract aids. second some of their beliefs like having sex with a vergin is supposed to cure aids or stop the spread of aids (which is not true). third some of them can't afford protection or medication to help with aids. also kids are being born with aids if their mothers are infected. i think that if they educate themselves about prevention and protection and also have people try to debug the myths about aids it might help but there will still be people out there unwilling to do any of the above so i don't know if it can be prevented but slowed down some.

Complex issue, to say the least. And too complex to fully illustrate here. Many people (not just African Americans) still hold on --sometimes subconsciously -- to the idea that HIV is a gay men's disease or an injection drug user disease. That places people at an increased risk. Poverty, socioeconomic status, lower educational levels make people more vulnerable to infection, and greatly increase the impact it has on a population. Racism and Sexism, along with Heterosexism/homophobia all can increase a person's vulnerability to HIV infection I recently attended a conference where this issue was discussed in detail and one of the biggest points brought up was: *a lack of black voices speaking out and educating their community about HIV. *The vast majority of Black Americans infected with HIV are unaware of their infection -- you can't protect yourself or your partner if you don't know your status. *70% of all Americans living with HIV are NOT in proper treatment and care What can be done? -increase awareness -volunteer with a related organization -make a donation to a related organization -TALK TO YOUR FRIENDS, NEIGHBOURS, AND FAMILY about HIV ---- Something everyone can to do to help raise awareness -demand action from your elected representatives I would check out the document: We're the One's We've Been Waiting For: The State of AIDS in Black America....and What We're Doing About It published by the Black AIDS Institute -info@BlackAIDS.org - www.BlackAIDS.org

It is the parents responsibility.
2 :
ya,it affects children and some children will obviously take another meaning of that ........ and it is the parents responsibility.
3 :
sorry, I can't think of one. There should be no reason why we should not teach AIDS prevention in schools. Zip. Nada.
4 :
Because HIV-AIDS is primarilly a sexually transmitted disease, and you'd have to teach the kids about the birds and the bees before you could discuss the transmission of the disease. Many or most parents want to be the ones to introduce the topic of sex to their kids, especially the first discussions, and they may feel grade school is too early. This type of discussion could frighten them- but a little fear goes a long way sometimes if it makes you cautious and thoughtful, because if you get HIV you can't undo it.
