Can dogs and cats get std's, hiv, aids, etc? Like premiscous dogs/cats who have sex with other dogs/cats

Can dogs and cats get std's, hiv, aids, etc? Like premiscous dogs/cats who have sex with other dogs/cats?
a lot, do they pass diseases onto each other like humans can with each other? I know aids came from monkey's. But what about dogs/cats?

The diseases animals pass to each other are very serious and often fatal. They are not like STDs but are more like infectious lung and respiratory diseases. (Link below) Keep your animals indoors and don't let them roam at will and you will have healthy pets.
2 :
Yes there is feline AIDS
3 :
Funny you should use the word promiscuous when you refer to cats and dogs. Dogs and cats have no inkling as to what morality and fidelity mean, because unlike humans, they are ruled by the estrus cycles which makes females go into heat, and males respond accordingly. If you've noticed, they pretty much ignore each other the rest of the time. Humans and monkeys are promiscuous, but not dogs and cats. I´m sure they get some diseases but I guess STD is not like one of them because they only have intercourse when the female is in heat. Humans, on the other hand, engage in intercourse whenever.
4 :
cats can get feline aids which is like our h.i.v cats get this through fighting with other cats that have it
5 :
Animals view sex as simply passing along their genes to the next generation. No emotional involvement at all. The more serious issues are transmission of diseases that they can carry, such as FIP, feline leukemia, and the results of fights they get into while involved in selecting a mating partner. They are not sexual diseases, just the side effect of being outside and exposed to other animals.

can you get HIV/AIDS from useing the same shower as an infected person and having a cut somewhere on the body

can you get HIV/AIDS from useing the same shower as an infected person and having a cut somewhere on the body?
my parents are both infected with HIV/AIDS and i was wondering....also could I get it by having a cut on my butt and useing a toilet that has urine in it and have the water splash up..but not used with in minutes of the infected person?????....and what if dry sperm got on my penis..could i get it from that??? please help
STDs - 2 Answers

1 :
I would venture to say no as for the splashing. It's rare that you get it from sitting on the toilet with a cut on your butt unless there is a super huge amount of blood from the both of you. May I suggest that you get educated about AIDs/HIV so that you don't panic.
2 :
yea you could it is very easy to contract HIV, you have to be very careful living in a house with two people infected. Also your parents should clean everything they use after, and if they have any open cuts or wounds they must be covered. Since you are living with them you should get tested for HIV every 6 months, and make sure your parents use disposable cups to drink from! Honestly i don't want to make you upset or anything but you should probably move in with a aunt or grandmother or something, i understand their your parents but its not a good environment to be in.

No. An HIV test looks for antibodies to the virus and leukemia is a problem of white blood cells. You need a complete blood count to screen for leukemia.

No - the HIV test, tests for the presence of the HIV. Luekemia is an entirely different type of illness with an entirely different test. Medical labs have to specifically test for what they are investigating. It is not like they can just put blood etc into a machine and it diagnoses all our ills.
2 :
NO it is not. But from a CBC that is a test that generally leads to a bone marrow test to find out if you do have it. That is how they found out that I had leukemia. I still have to have all kinds of blood tests to show that I do not have it. I have been in remission for 2 years and 5 months, and so far I have not had to have a bone marrow test. I certainly hope that you are not thinking that you have leukemia. It is a bad type of cancer.

I think they lose the sense of responsibility when they become intoxicated. This happens to adults , too.
3 :
-sharing needles very easy way to transmit -drunk/drug act less responsibly less likely to practice safe sex -the "crowd" you associte with in drugs circles more likely to be infected -some scientists beleive that AIDS is a by product/result of some drug combinations (or at very best enhances the spread) -lowers your immunity to all illnesses
4 :
they cloud their judgement when it comes to sharing a needle or having unprotected sex, someone that is all cracked out isn't going to think about using a condom
5 :
If you are high or drunk then you are not thinking straight. People who aren't thinking straight tend to be careless. Sharing a needles or having sex without a condom is careless. Carelessness is what causes this disease to continue to spread.

4 :
By HIV infected blood entering your bloodstream, so via needle-sharing, sex, blood transfusions (but not through kissing, swimming pools, sharing tableware or other normal social interaction).
5 :
Sharing of body fluids: sexual contact, blood in eyes or mouth or open wounds-- there are a lot of ways hypothesized, but most have very low risk potential. It's not proven you can get it from tears, mosquito bites and other small-volume transfers.
6 :
1. unprotected sex 2. tainted blood transfusions 3. could be passed on to the child by the mother if she is carrying the virus
7 :
This is from the site linked below, "HIV is spread by sexual contact with an infected person, by sharing needles and/or syringes (primarily for drug injection) with someone who is infected, or, less commonly (and now very rarely in countries where blood is screened for HIV antibodies), through transfusions of infected blood or blood clotting factors. Babies born to HIV-infected women may become infected before or during birth or through breast-feeding after birth." There is much more information at the CDC site linked below.
8 :
Oh wow! It could start from anything sexual since it is transmitted throuh bodily fluids.

3 :
If you get sick a lot. Then you MIGHT have it
4 :
If you suspect that you or someone you know may be infected,a bloodtest is a MUST,for absolute certainty. But here is some info that you might find helpful...... Many people do not develop symptoms after getting infected with HIV. Some people have a flu-like illness within several days to weeks after exposure to the virus. They complain of fever, headache, tiredness, and enlarged lymph glands in the neck. These symptoms usually disappear on their own within a few weeks. Following initial infection, you may have no symptoms. The progression of disease varies widely among individuals. This state may last from a few months to more than 10 years. During this period, the virus continues to multiply actively and infects and kills the cells of the immune system. The immune system allows us to fight against the bacteria, viruses, and other infectious causes. The virus destroys the cells that are the primary infection fighters, called CD4+ or T4 cells. Once the immune system weakens, a person infected with HIV can develop the following symptoms: Lack of energy Weight loss Frequent fevers and sweats Persistent or frequent yeast infections Persistent skin rashes or flaky skin Short-term memory loss Mouth, genital, or anal sores from herpes infections. AIDS is the most advanced stage of HIV infection. The definition of AIDS includes all HIV-infected people who have fewer than 200 CD4+ cells per microliter of blood. The definition also includes 26 conditions that are common in advanced HIV disease but that rarely occur in healthy people. Most of these conditions are infections caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, and other organisms. Opportunistic infections are common in people with AIDS. Nearly every organ system is affected. Some of the common symptoms include the following: Cough and shortness of breath Seizures and lack of coordination Difficult or painful swallowing Mental symptoms such as confusion and forgetfulness Severe and persistent diarrhea Fever Vision loss Nausea, abdominal cramps, and vomiting Weight loss and extreme fatigue Severe headaches with neck stiffness Coma People with AIDS are prone to develop various cancers such as Kaposi sarcoma, cervical cancer, and cancers of the immune system known as lymphomas. Kaposi sarcoma causes round, brown, reddish or purple spots that develop in the skin or in the mouth. After the diagnosis of AIDS is made, the average survival time has been estimated to be 2-3 years.

should governments implement mandatory/involuntary HIV/Aids testing in order to curb infection

should governments implement mandatory/involuntary HIV/Aids testing in order to curb infection? ?
I'm doing a paper and I need points for mandatory HIV/Aids testing.
Infectious Diseases - 4 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
mandatory hiv testing is against your civil rights. we have a right to privacy and that completely invades it. i do not engage in a high risk behavior, except working in health care, but i can tell you i would be furious if the government came around to try and test me. my status hiv or not is my business and mine only. you should research HIPAA laws.
2 :
no, not any more than for any other disease
3 :
the government shouldn't infringe on your privacy like that, especially for a disease so entrenched in hatred and discrimination. But if you have to take that stance (and i hope its not your real opinion) then your best bet is to point out that there is no way to tell if a person has infection or not, they can remain healthy for years and still have the virus. as long as they have the virus it can be spread. A lot of people have never gotten an hiv test, even though the CDC recommends that every one should know their status (if they are at any kind of risk). everyone should know but a lot of people are too scared to find out, or they don't know enough to get tested. But i do not encourage or endorse that idea under any terms.
4 :
They could try, but my blood sample would be mingled with the blood of whoever tried. A good case can be made for rapists, those who engage in violence (biting, fighting, etc.), and those involved in prostitution (both sides), but there would be lots of assaults going on if they came around testing everyone. First, it's an assault on my rights. Secondly, do you really think that insurance companies wouldn't use the information they obtained (legally or not) to discriminate more than they already do? Lastly, I have HCV, the CDC says it is transmissible through sex. They even have a study which they say substantiates that claim. Read the fine print. It tells you that out of 400+ couples there was one instance where the genotypes of the HCV appeared to show that they were passed from one spouse to the other. No questions were asked about rough or unprotected anal sex, both of which can lead to the blood/blood required for passing HCV. The reason I bring this up is that different governmental agencies have brought bills up for vote that suggest HCV funding be included with AIDS funding, as both are sexually transmissible. I'm not saying that HIV and full blown AIDS aren't worthy of funding. I'm pointing out that HCV has infected an estimated 3 - 5 million Americans. Put the funds together and HCV won't receive any funding.

Can 2 two clean guys with no STD/HIV/AIDS get any of them

Can 2 two clean guys with no STD/HIV/AIDS get any of them?
Im worried about this. As a guy guy, Im curious if two clean guys have sex, can they get HIV/AIDS or and STD, and if so, how to prevent it
STDs - 7 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
No, STD’s don’t just come from thin air, they must be contracted. In order to help prevent getting an STD I suggest wearing a condom. Signed, You’re Good Friend. -Ryan M
2 :
Gender doesn't matter. If two people have both been tested and are both negative for any diseases and choose to have sex, they should be fine. There is an exception with HIV because it can not show up right away on a test. You should talk to your doctor about that.
3 :
It takes one of the guys to have an STD in order to pass it on. STSs don't come from thin air. If two clean guys have sex and they know they are 100% STD free then they should have nothing to worry about.
4 :
Prevent it by using condoms. And make a 100% sure the other guy is clean. That is with anyone. Also, remember that who ever they have slept with you will be sleeping with too.
5 :
it doesn't matter if you are gay or straight, in order to catch anything (stds or hiv )one of the sexually active people has to have something to pass it on if you are that worried contact your local clinic and they will test you
6 :
If both guys are clean, there is no way anything can happen. But if either guy had been with someone else, please both go get a full HIV/STD screening, after those results, have a ball! Just don't go outside the relationship- or if you do use protection.
7 :
If neither person has any STDs, there's no way that either of them can get an STD by having sex with each other. However, remember that some STDs including HIV have no symptoms soon after infection, and may take time to show up on tests, so it is possible that either person could be infected and not know it. Condom use or abstinence are the only ways to prevent sexual transmission of STDs, including HIV.

Can you contact HIV/AIDS through sex between man and man?
I hear different things about contracting the virus. Im heterosexual bt im just curious. A guy can only get the virus if the other guy comes and leaves his fluids in the guys anus. I hear different things. which one is tru??

1 :
Any type of fluid exchange can transfer the HIV virus.
2 :
thats how the 'gay' aids started.
3 :
Duh...AIDS is most popular with gay people.
4 :
homosexual or heterosexual... you can still contract hiv/aids thru unprotected sexual contact. bodily fluids such as vaginal/penis secreations, blood, and such can carry the diseases and when they come into contact with an individual always have a chance of giving that person the diseases.
5 :
Yes you can.
6 :
Yes! HIV infection is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus. You can get HIV from contact with infected blood, semen, or vaginal fluids. * Most people get the virus by having unprotected sex with someone who has HIV. * Another common way of getting the virus is by sharing drug needles with someone who is infected with HIV. * The virus can also be passed from a mother to her baby during pregnancy, birth, or breast-feeding. HIV doesn't survive well outside the body. So it cannot be spread by casual contact such as kissing or sharing drinking glasses with an infected person.
7 :
AIDS is NOT a "gay" person disease! It is a disease that affects EVERYONE! Men who engage in anal sex can tear or rip the anal cavity in which case there will be fluid exchange between the blood from the tear and the semen. Another way is through oral sex. Yes, you CAN get AIDS from oral sex. Even if you do not swallow. Pratice safe sex EACH AND EVERY time!
8 :
You can only get hiv from someone who is already infected. If there were 2 gay males and they were to have intercourse as long as both are hiv free there is no chance of getting it. Just being gay dose'nt mean you will chance getting it
9 :
You can get HIV from any partner that is HIV+ male or female. For male to male sex, unprotected anal is one of the highest risk, but that would be the same risk for a female that did the same thing. So unprotected sex with a partner that you do not know their HIV status is a risk.

No good job on getting some.
2 :
maybe its time to find a new girlfriend...careful she might get pregnant if you touch her
3 :
Is it Really worth the risk?
4 :
No The Virus is just like anything else...it doesn't appear randomly. To catch HIV you must come into contact with a person's body fluids that has HIV. If you had unprotected sex with a person that had HIV you could catch it. But it has to come from one of the two people. What your girlfriend is suggesting is a school of thought from the Dark Ages. It was called "Spontaneous Generation" which meant life just appears. We know now it is incorrect. But if you can believe it people thought maggots just spontaneously appeared on a dead animal. We know now that they are fly larvae. But you get my point right? The Virus is a living thing. So, it has to come from one of the two people. Now you must also understand HIV and AIDS, they are separate. HIV (Human Immune Virus) is the virus that causes AIDS (Auto Immune Deficiency Syndrome). AIDS is a condition where you basically have no Immune system. It is caused by the way the HIV reproduces by taking over T cells thus the after effect is your immune system dies. If a person has AIDS then they do have HIV but if they have HIV they may not present AIDS. The virus can take years to finally cause sickness in it's host. But if neither of you has HIV to begin with niether will have it afterwards. No matter what weird things you do. Use protection at all times. Remeber even people that look "healthy" may have HIV!
5 :
It is called a Sexually Transmitted Disease. Transmitted means moved from one to the other, so if neither of you have it, then it's not there to move to the other one.

General blood tests look for complete blood count and SMA 12: platelets, leukocytes, red blood cells, bilirubin, etc. The test does not look for a specific virus, but may detect an immune system reaction to one.
2 :
No, unless you specifically ask to be tested for HIV.
3 :
they usually do a cmp, cbc and possibly cholesterol levels. it does not include a hiv aids test unless you specifically ask for one. you would know if you were drawn for one because you have to sign a special consent.

4 :
No, the HIV virus is present in blood and body secretions (ie, seminal fluid), you cannot 'think yourself infected', you need direct invasive contact with an infected person to contract the virus. xx
5 :
Yes, this is true about AIDS and also a number of other diseases. Many studies have been done linking a number of cancers being spread by the mere thought of them. A case study in England asked patients to concentrate on a particular illness over a 6 week period, and 35% of the participants actually contracted that illness. It is interesting to note that 6% of the patients contracted the illness of the person sitting next to them, just because they knew it was contagious. The mind is a very powerful organ that can regulate the output of antibodies and antitoxins used to fight various diseases. If the mind is conditioned to such an extent that it firmly believes it has a disease then it is a very real possibility that that disease will manifest itself. I hope this information is helpful. Until we can figure out a way to change human nature, nothing much we come up with is likely to work. There is already a method to prevent the transmission of the disease, but it requires folks to abstain or stay faithful to one clean partner. I doubt a vaccination is likely to be successful, since we can't even manage to get all the kids in the world a simple measles shot- we aren't much more likely to get them all vaccinated for HIV either. That of course hinges on a vaccine even being developed, which so far has eluded us. There are still only a few medications that are useful against viruses, and those still depend on having an otherwise healthy immune system. Since HIV attacks the immune system, overcoming it to develop a preventative- little alone a cure, is just not highly probable. The best I think we can hope for is reducing it to more a chronic condition we can try to control, like diabetes. We aren't likely to change people.
2 :
Hi stop screwing anything that wears a skirt and stick to one partner - that's the only way
3 :
It's pretty easy to prevent it. 1) Practice SAFE SEX. that means you always make sure that a condom is being used and that no blood mixes between you. 2) if you take drugs, don't share your needles with anyone else, they are yours alone. As for over coming it, I doubt they ever will as pharmaceutical companies are making huge bucks on it. It's a little like cancer, they have become big businesses and they rather treat you than prevent it. Sorry to sound so cynical.

Sorry I can't really think of a picture or art that could describe it.
2 :
They have a yellow ribbon for AIDS, like they have pink robbon for breast cancer, maybe you could use that Or tattoo some statistics, like 2008= something many people died of HIV and something died of AIDS Or maybe find some famous quotes from the net and add and AIDS theme

Here is a red ribbon wrapped around the world.

First let me say having lost a best friend to this illness, and knowing many others affected by it, I really empathise with your cause. The classic emblem for HIV/AIDS awareness is the red ribbon, however you must understand that unfortunatly, there is still a lot of stigma associated with this disease, and so, ill feeling may be attached (by the ignorrant) to any related symbology, so be very careful about what and where, or you may be setting yourself up for a lot of hardship in the future, I would suggest something a little subtle, which is what your asking anyway so: A candle-world AIDS day vigil and all that A patchwork quilt -The AIDS rememberence quilt Hands holding-unity against the stigma and the illness I had a dragonfly, cuz my mate loved them and they represent spirit and soul and rebirth-like butterflies-work something into the wings of a butterfly so it aint to obvious.

The three most commonly referred to scenarios. 1. man and monkey 2. scratched or bitten by a monkey 3. eating a monkey that was not prepared right Although there are many other theories on how aids came to be, I suggest typing keywords "how aids came to be" into google if you want a more thorough explanation.
10 :
The year was 1959. Location: the central African city of Leopoldville, now called Kinshasa, shortly before the waves of violent rebellion that followed the liberation of the Belgian Congo. (There was a really good drama based on true stories on HBO sometime ago that told the story of the beginning of aids. called 'And The band Played On' There is a link in sources that talks about it. It was a very enlightening movie for me.

12 :
I learned this in GTA 4(games are sometimes educational) HIV/AIDS came from monkeys. Apparently, some monkeys (chimps)have this strand of 2 diseases that form HIV. There were a few options how this guy got it. He either fucked the monkey. He probably ate the infected monkey. Or he was chopping up the poor chimp for dinner, and he cut himself and the virus spread in his body. Most likely the 3rd option. Thats what I would want to believe.
13 :
Monkeys I am pretty sure. Although it sounds strange. How did humans get it? lol. Obvisouly they were having sex with monkeys or sharing needles, lol. I think that's something you might need to google again and read up on carefully, because it isn't something I wish to read about, lol.

Is it true that the injectable contraceptive Depo Provera contains the HIV/AIDS virus? Please help!

Is it true that the injectable contraceptive Depo Provera contains the HIV/AIDS virus? Please help!?
On the 27th of January 2008 an article appeared in a Zambian paper that they tested Depo provera and found that it contained the HIV virus. This particular batch was sent to them in November last year by USAID. Please help we are all afraid. If there are any labs to test for us we can purchase the Depo for you.

The only reference that I could find to this myth was in a story published in 2004 detailing how the World Health Organization could be enabling the spread of HIV/AIDS in Africa by using Depo instead of giving out condoms. I am 99.9% sure that HIV is not in any doses of Depo. You can contact the company that makes the medicine at 1-866-554-3376 twenty four hours a day, or contact Pfizer, the company that makes Depo Provera on their website http://www.pfizer.com/contact/mail_general.jsp

That is African propaganda against western medicine and birth control.

Mrs clown! "i really dnt think it's just an African propaganda as it is said there is no smoke without fire. anything is possible in this world of today just like before we've faced such so anything is possible right now, we can't trust no one. maybe even you could be a part of the crew. you seem to know nothing so please give chance to better people who care to advise us! People out there who care well we just need a clear picture"

Name of the movie about young boys and HIV/Aids?
I remember watching a movie a few years back (like 5) about a young boy who had HIV and ended up spreading it around to his group of friends because he had unprotected sex with many girls. Also i remember there was a girl who had been having unprotected sex with many guys and never got aids, but her friend who had sex with only one guy ended up infected.

EXPAT IN SAUDI ARABIA WANTS TO KNOW IF THERE IS HIV/AIDS IN SAUDI ARABIA

EXPAT IN SAUDI ARABIA WANTS TO KNOW IF THERE IS HIV/AIDS IN SAUDI ARABIA?
I CAME TO KSA HIV NEGATIVE; 10 MONTHS LATER AM HIV POSITIVE. HAD ONLY TWO OR THREE ENCOUNTERS EACH WEEK. THOUGHT EVERYONE HERE WAS HIV NEGATIVE. WHAT HAPPENED?

No country in the world is absolutely HIV negative. You should have used protection...& now even more so:-)
2 :
someone u've been with was obviously carring the virus...that sucks!!
3 :
HIV/AIDs is everywhere. Obviously it is more common in some areas that others, but you would be insane to not look after yourself. 2 or 3 encounters a week? haha, are you suprised?
4 :
HIV is a virus...it was probably dormant in your body for your first test.

they sell condoms here ya know!
7 :
yes, there's HIV/AIDS in ALL countries. If you weren't promiscuous you wouldn't have contracted HIV..... And, what about using condoms.... Also, I believe it takes some time for HIV to show up in blood tests, so people can come here with HIV if they took the blood test right after contracting the virus.
8 :
There is a small number of Aids cases in Saudi, mostly expats or people with multiple sex partners. You have 3 encounters a week and do not expect to get AIDS....you are stupid!

your question mirrors your ignorance, and that you're just a dumb douche. you most likely got it from a sex-laborer-RUSSIANS ANYONE? GROSS.

Why can't HIV/AIDS be transmitted through saliva

Why can't HIV/AIDS be transmitted through saliva?
I'm writing a paper for Health, and I was wondering, why can't you get HIV/AIDS from kissing? I would think that all bodily fluids would be infected, but not saliva? Is there not enough of the virus in saliva to infect someone, or does the digestive acid kill it, or what?
STDs - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
i think only if you drink like two litres of it lol
2 :
There is not enough HIV in saliva for it to be transmitted that way. IDK why the amount of the virus is so low in saliva, though.
3 :
HIV is found in some white blood cells, when it's in saliva it's diluted and there is acid in your saliva. So if you got saliva from kissing someone in your mouth you will do one of two things, spit ot out, or swallow if you swallow and there happened to be HIV in it, the acid in your stomach would kill the HIV. Body fluid that are carriers of HIV are blood, semen, vaginal fluid and breast milk, these fluid can be excreted from the body. There is HIV in spinal fluid, but that is contained with in the body of the HIV+ person. All other body fluid either have no HIV or have so little that it will not infect a person.

Can I get HIV/AIDS from a mosquito

Can I get HIV/AIDS from a mosquito?
Can a mosquito give you HIV/AIDS if it sucked the blood of someone who has aids? My friend who has HIV and I were camping and odds are mosquitos bit both of us.

I belive that the mosquito wont be able to survive I think.
2 :
The simple answer is... NO. While it is not completely impossible, getting AIDS from an insect bite is EXTREMELY unlikely.
3 :
No, it's not possible
4 :
No you can not get HIV from mosquitoes the CDC has done many many studies on this subject. When mosquitoes bite you they do not inject blood they inject saliva and after feeding mosquitoes they rest after.. they never go from person to person to feed they feed once then have to rest after the resting period there is not enough blood in the saliva to carry HIV to other people. They do however retain malaria in their saliva always and that is why we can get malaria from mosquitoes..so no worries you can not get HIV from "shared" mosquitoes on your camping trip...
5 :
I don't think that has ever been proven. Although, it is possible to receive some very serious diseases via mosquitoes. I believe the U.S. military has even experimented with them as a weapon.

Can someone give me statistics on HIV/AIDS?
I am doing a big essay for one of my classes, and it's about HIV/AIDS. Is there anyone that can give me a statistic on out of the people the get HIV/AIDS how many end up dying because of AIDS/HIV related reasons?

provided they don't get hit by a car or something...all of them. AIDS doesn't kill you, it just makes it easier for other stuff to kill you, so any sort of disease related death after you have AIDS is in some way related to AIDS.

Lauric acid was first discovered as the main antiviral and antibacterial substance in human breast milk. It is a medium chain, saturated fatty acid that is also found in coconut products. Monolaurin is the glycerol ester of lauric acid and is more biologically active than lauric acid. Monolaurin has been shown to be active against influenza virus, pneumovirus, paramyxovirus (Newcastle), morbillivirus (rubeola), coronavirus (avian infectious, bronchitis virus), herpes simplex I & II, CMV, EBV, and HIV. Monolaurin disrupts the lipid bilayer of the virus preventing attachment to susceptible host cells. It binds to the lipid-protein envelope of the virus and inactivates the virus. Monolaurin inhibits the replication of viruses by interrupting the binding of virus to host cells and prevents uncoating of viruses necessary for replication and infection. Monolaurin can remove all measurable infectivity by directly disintegrating the viral envelope. Monolaurin binding to the viral envelope makes a virus more susceptible to host defenses.

Can an overweight person have HIV/AIDs and not lose any weight in 5 years - actually gain weight

Can an overweight person have HIV/AIDs and not lose any weight in 5 years - actually gain weight
My girlfriend and I have been having this on-going debate. Yes, it's silly. But we find dumb things to debate about who's right or wrong. She thinks a person that is infected with HIV/AIDs can be overweight and stay overweight, not lose any weight and be 300 lbs. without knowing they have the disease. I say it's impossible for this to happen, because of all the side effects of the disease an overweight person would surely lose some weight in over 5 years - not gain the weight? She also seems to think that a person could go undiagnosed for years because unless a patient asks to be tested for it - they won't be tested for it. I am almost positive if a person goes for blood work they would see some kind of discrepancy in the red and white cells and would have to further investigate that and figure out that the person was infected. What do you guys think? I think we need to stop watching the medical channel and finding crazy things like this to debate over lol.

Someone could be infected and not have any symptoms for years. So I would say she is right. It would be rare. Also, you could both start doing research to substantiate your viewpoint. That can be interesting and informative.
2 :
Yes, a person can certainly maintain weight while being infected with HIV. Until the immune system is really depressed and they actually become ill, most people feel healthy. That is why blood testing is so imprtant. And no, a normal CBC (complete blood count) would not give any clues to HIV infection, that is until the disease has progressed enough so that the white count becomes depleted. Most people would be feeling pretty ill at the point, so suspicion for disease would already be high.
3 :
With HIV, medications, proper eating and exercise can help a person to live longer. It is when the HIV virus turns to AIDS when a person's body can no longer fight the infections of the common colds and flu that a person HIV negative can. Usually with that, a person with AIDS would tend to lose weight unexpectedly and perhaps drastically due to possible improper eating, medication side effects, when their ill, and also because their immune system can no longer maintain it's health. However, many people with HIV do not know they have HIV because they may think they have another form of illness and that is unfortunate when their body tends to turn to AIDS quicker than of those who found out they were HIV+ from the beginning. That is why it is important to get tested always to know your status. The earlier they are to detect HIV, the better the doctors can help you live a longer life. Unfortunately, PEOPLE in general can be in denial of situations. HIV is probably the second worse fear of everyone next to death. PEOPLE need to take responsibility within their own hands and get tested. Stop living in denial and get tested. In my experience, I was raped by a person I knew. He tested negative and I took the courage to test over 20 times within and outside the window period of HIV testing. I was deathly scared, but I had to do it. I wanted to save my life and I did not want to put my future partner(s)/possible children at risk. Yes, I wanted to be in denial and act like life is grand, but I couldn't. I knew that I had to go get a HIV TEST because I was exposed from a rape. THANK GOODNESS, I turned out HIV NEGATIVE after all of it. GET TESTED and stop living in denial. If you are sexually active, whether condoms or not, always get tested. That is the bottom line.
4 :
She's right. People who take retrovirals on a regular basis lose weight. Those who don't may not show any signs or symptoms for years. http://www.aidsinfo.nih.gov/
5 :
Yes of course
6 :
Regarding SYMPTOMS: There are rarely any symptoms of HIV soon after infection, possibly for several years. Some people have flu-like symptoms, but not everyone does. The lack of symptoms is the reason testing is so important. Many times, people pass the virus on to others without even realizing they themselves are infected. Symptoms often don't show up until the person's immune system is severely damaged, leaving the person susceptible to other illnesses such as colds, flu, and pneumonia. ***Regarding TESTING: In order to diagnose HIV, testing specifically for the antibodies to HIV (most commonly) or the virus itself (more expensive followup test) must be done. It can not be diagnosed by routine blood test. ***Also, your girlfriend is correct about testing. By law, a person CAN NOT be tested for HIV unless he/she signs a consent form and specifically requests the test. The only situation I know of in which HIV testing is mandatory is blood donation. Blood is tested for HIV and other diseases. If HIV or Hep is found, the blood must be discarded, and the person is notified of their result and informed that they can no longer donate blood. Also, people who have had recent risky behaviors, and possible recent HIV infection (within the past 3 months), are told not to donate because even if they are infected, the antibodies may not show up on tests yet.

Can HIV/AIDS be spread through an infected person cooking

Can HIV/AIDS be spread through an infected person cooking?
I am just a little concerned because I recently found out one of my coworkers may have HIV. He routinely cooks for our clients and doesn't always wear gloves. Should I be concerned? Two of our other coworker through big hissy fits about him cooking. Whoops, I meant threw.

No, this is ridiculous.
6 :
don't be concerned, because HIV/AIDS can't be spread just by someone cooking, evem sharing food doesn't spread it
7 :
lol no i dont think it wil do nething to u...
8 :
no. HIV/AIDS can be caused only by blood to blood contact. unless his blood and your blood make contact, then you can't get it.
9 :
It can only be spread through body fluids, so I doubt cooking could transmit it.
10 :
No.
11 :
Nope. Nothing to worry about. The only way that you can spread aids through cooking is if a fairly large about of his blood got into the food that you ate... which isn't goign to happen so no worries
12 :
Dont worry the virus is not resistible to heat or cold when its free at the air
13 :
absolutely not. HIV/AIDS can only be spread through some body fluids, not including saliva, urine, sweat, or tears. The fluids that carry the virus are blood, semen, and vaginal secretions. The virus can not live outside it's human host's body, so even if the cook cut themselves and got some blood in the food, the consumers are still not at risk.
14 :
I wouldn't be concerned in the least.
15 :
Unless he ejaculates or bleeds into the food, then no. Hepatitis, on the other hand, CAN be spread easily if the infected person doesn't wash his/her hands after using the bathroom.
16 :
Not unless he bleeds or ejaculates all over the finished dish.
17 :
It's very unlikely that you could catch it that way. Sort of a one in a million shot. Take a look at this chart to understand the rather limited chances. http://campus.murraystate.edu/academic/faculty/frank.elwell/Prob3/GLOSSARY/Sohel13.gif Blood transfusions usually involve quite a bit of blood, and it usually takes quite a bit of contact in blood to get it. No blood brother activities and you'll be fine.
18 :
if the virus is cooked, it will be killed! But if he touched vegetables raw ones, or soemthing thta is not cooked, and there is blood on it and you swallow blood yes you will get it! About the saliva, the percentage is really small you will get it
19 :
NO! These ugly rumors need to stop! Even if they dripped blood or spit into the food, the heat at which they are cooking would kill the virus, plus the virus has already been exposed to air. I'm no doctor, but I feel pretty safe with that assumption!
