It needs blood as a host, a human person, so it dies almost instantly outside the body.

HIV ( virus that can lead to AIDS) will survive longer in a syringe than in open air, but I can not give you a definite time frame as to how much longer.

Virus only survives inside a cell, which can be found inside a living body.
