Why are so many people so ignorant about HIV/AIDS

Why are so many people so ignorant about HIV/AIDS?
I've been reading a lot of the questions on here and trying to answer some of them and I am shocked at how ignorant so many people seem to be. Some of the answers given would mean that nearly everyone in the world has the virus, by now. This isn't the 80s.

you should better ask the goverment about strategies of prevention..It's a matter of education and will to protect one an other..

IMPO, a lot of the problem is the strong 'pro-ignorance' presence in local, state, and federal governments. These are folks who believe that giving young people NO information or WRONG information will lead to young people avoiding sex. They must be in a state of willful denial if they can't see that their strategy isn't leading to abstinence at all, it is leading to disease and unwanted pregnancy. I would never never want my child to be a burning building -- but neglecting to teach fire safety is NOT the way to achieve this end.

I totally agree with you. I have worked with a support network for people with HIV and Hepatitus C, and was continually stunned at the questions I was asked regarding how these viruses are spread. Something in health education has failed. I still here people suggesting it is only Africans and homosexuals who have HIV - nothing could be further from the truth. It is frightening, all we can do is continue to try and enlighten people and make them more aware of the risks.

Well, mix 1 part hysteria with 1 part denial and what do you get? Then mix in a little bigotry and BAM!

I think so many people are arrogant about sex, they just believe they're invincible. And what effects society will not effect them, since of course they're care full about who they sleep with. I think people expect someone with AIDS to look a certain way.So if they see a good looking person they must be (clean). DUMB HUH?

i think that people are so caught up in the moment that they dont think about their future at all including the risks that they take on a daily basis. i believe most people are informed but choose to do whatever they want because "it wont happen to me" syndrome

In part because it suits certain politically minded individuals in the African and gay communities to spread the idea that AIDS is unrelated to the HIV virus. This is not the case, this virus actively targes and diminishes cells of the immune system, it has been demonstrated over and over again and really not in question any more. Unrelated: solve the commuting problem, google Hallitubes and tell your friends.

Be causes of ignorance. There should be awakening among the people. The people should be educated through the dailies, magazines, T.V. ,Cinema and Notices, Lectures. etc. The younger generations should be educated about this. It should be taught in all the collages. The Government should take action to prevent, to control the Aids. What all should be done must be done. The Government and the Society have more responsibility to prevent it.

people are always going to be ignorant to something they don't understand. alot of people think gays and drug addicts only get aids but thats not true look at all the children in africa born with aids and their mothers die before they grow up and are able to take care of themselves, thats what people don't understand. those children arent gay, neither are the innocent women who don't their husbands have given them aids until it's too late.

This is one of the disease where people have the "It cannot happen to me Syndrome"....Also,because of the social stigma attached to it (am not sure of devolped countries, but am talking about devolping countries),people just dont wanna talk about HIV and hence remain ignorant about the dangers of risky behaviour.

There is a difference between STUPIDITY and IGNORANCE. IGNORANCE means that you are uneducated about it. STUPIDITY is when you know and chose not to acknowledge it. I would have to say that most people are stupid. I'm sorry but if you were born anytime after 1975 then you should have learned (in school) what the difference between HIV and AIDS is, and the ways that it can be contracted. Not to mention that the virus dies once it's out of the body. SO I am going to say if you are over 30 then you are probably ignorant but any younger than that you are stupid. This shouldn't shock you. I was being very generous when i said 30...that shoulda been 40.
