One of those guys asking for donations shook my hand before telling me he was HIV positive. I am really freakked out. Are there viruses on my hand now? How long will they stay? What if I have mnimal scratches on my hand, or scratch myself afterwards with it? Can I get infected? What's the risk? I am really petrified, please someone knowledgeable let me know.

Zero chance dude. Unless he was bleeding all over an open wound you have or something, or hacked up blood when he coughed and it got in your eyes or mouth.

You will not get HIV/AIDS from a handshake unless of course he had a fresh bloody cut on his hands and you did as well. HIV/AIDS is transmitted via blood and body fluids.

HIV is really hard to transmit through a handshake. Unless You had an open bleeding would and he had an open bleeding wound and you "blood buddied" each other then you could get it. Just wash your hands a couple times with antibacterial soap and lather your hands with purell. Your skin acts like a barrier for diseases and The virus can't live long outside the body, a couple minutes at most. So just clean it really well and get tested in 3 months just to be sure. Man im studyin bio now n accordin to me HIV AIDs is not transmitted through handshake,kissing or by hugging but is transmitted by sexual contact with prostitutes,also u must wash ur hands thoroughly with dettol or lifeboy soap n must try to keep ur hands away from injury for at least 2-3 days and must consult ur doctor about this incidence

You are not at risk. You can not get HIV from casual contact, such as shaking hands. Relax.

Jeez that's just mean. You're acting like he's not a human being. It's JUST a freaking handshake! Did you both happen to be bleeding?? Did you have sex with this man?? NO. JUST a handshake, you're good. You have a better chance of someone spitting on the sidewalk and catching TB. Chill out.
