Why are people with HIV/AIDS discriminated against?

Discrimination against HIV/AIDS patients is due mainly to ignorance, misinformation, or both. There are still millions of people that believe that HIV/AIDS is a "gay" or "IV drug user [junkie]" disease; and that it can be transmitted via casual contact [shaking hands, using public toilets,and so on].
