I read on wikipedia that 75% of all hiv/aids cases happen in africa. is that really true? and if so why?

1 :
it dates back to the origins of HIV. it came from the Green monkeys indigenous to africa. eventually the monkeys spread it to humans, and voila, you have aids in africa
2 :
Aids originated in Africa for starters. Some other reasons would be Africa in most cases has poor medical treatment and a lack of testing for the disease. It is difficult to not spread a disease if you are not aware you have it.
3 :
IT IS TRUE..it happens because of poverty...which has been preserved in africa by environmentalists..they care more about protecting elephants and tse-tse flies than people...they have prevented africa from developing their economies...also the world wide ban on DDT kills millions every year, yet there is no credible evidence that DDT is harmful...americans dumped thousand of tons of DDT onto panama to build the canal there...no ill effects...it was the only way to be in that jungle...the mosquito's were killing everyone.as they are doing today in africa as well... and oh yeah...they shoot poachers, don't they? has nothing to do with education and condoms,as the liberals would have you believe...it is they who kill those people...
4 :
Africans have a lot of unprotected sex.
5 :
Because they are an impoverished third world continent that has very little education, contraception or recreation besides sex.
6 :
Many don't get tested; those that are infected, they spread it by sexual intercourse. Another factor is due to a cultural belief in Africa that AIDS is cured when you have sex with a virgin. Needless to say, the woman who is raped is also infected, and that creates another endless cycle of AIDS spreading.
7 :
Blacks account for over half of the AIDS cases in the US, amazing since they only acound for 13% of the population. It is a genetic predisposition towards this lifestyle, on average. This statistic proves its not just lack of education.
8 :
the result of uncontrolled polygamous relationships
9 :
It is hard to tell every one that dies in Africa ''dies of aid'' there is a lot of money to be made off aids for these countries There is even a little talk about circumcision helping to prevent aids but since only white males are circumcised in America it is not P C to talk of it
10 :
Because the HIV users isn't limited to gays, drug users and prostitutes. In Africa the disease is spread through heterosexuals as well as gays, and prostitutes. The lack of testing and the lack of medical care leads to more cases. The other big problem in Africa is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.
11 :
Is that all that you read? Did you not read about how they maybe got it? There's a lot of dirty crap that goes on in the country with this country playing a big role in it. Right here in this country there was the 'Tuskegee experiment'. And guess who the guinea pigs were? Poor black men who thought they were actually being treated but were not.
12 :
HIV originated in Africa so it was the first place it spread. Also the nations of Africa are extremely poor. Many of them can barely feed their own people, so providing things like health care services and proper education is beyond their ability. Its also reached a stage where such a large percentage of the population has HIV in some countries that it is impossible to contain.
13 :
1. Africa is ground zero for the AIDS epidemic. I believe it is a simian virus that jumped to humans. 2. You have a lot of people who just haven't been educated on how AIDS is transmitted, steps that could prevent it, exc. You don't have the resources to stop its transmission, like you do in the developed world. You don't have regular opportunities to be tested, either. 3. Poverty in a lot of African nations has driven a lot of women into prostitution. Mozambique, for example, comes to my mind as one such country that had these problems. Poverty raises the numbers of prostitutes, the number of prostitutes raises the AIDS crisis, the AIDS crisis makes the poverty worse...and so it goes... 4. Once you've passed a certain threshold of people who have AIDS in your country, it becomes difficult to keep in check. Peace

Would you stay with your spouse if they got HIV/AIDS through a blood transfusion Or...?
If they had an extra-marital affair once and you have choosen to forgive it, but later find out that they caught the disease when they had the affair.... What would you do?

If it was through a blood transfusion, of course I would stand by her. But, we wouldn't be having sex. Oral, yes. Penetration, no.
2 :
Absolutely to the first, and most likely to the second (since I had presumably found a way to forgive it). But it would be a real test.
3 :
Tuff call about the cheating one bc that would be bringing it right back to the surface. Thru transfusion only is the one I'd be ok with I think
4 :
I think I would have to leave. If you have HIV then that bastard gave it to you and if you don't then you need to get out - they made their choice. If you stay, then you have to accept that you are going to get it. There is no staying and 'being careful'. Nothing works perfectly and eventually you will get it - it might take ten years but eventually you will. If you can afford the meds they do provide a normalized life-expectancy today. HIV is no longer the death sentence it once was. PS You can get HIV by giving oral sex (both sexes). In fact, I would wager a man is more likely to get HIV by giving a women oral sex than through normal intercourse.
5 :
Stay either way.
6 :
i would have never forgiven him for cheating to start with ...
7 :
I'm one of those odd people who view HIV/AIDS as a medical affliction, not a sexual issue, so of course I'd stay. I'd also get tested.
8 :
If it was through the blood transfusion, yes. I made a vow through sickness and health right! But if I was cheated on and my spouse got hiv/ aids.... No way
9 :
This is indeed a very difficult question to answer but if your spouse had an affair and later tested positive for HIV/AIDS yes I would divorce them. It is your health you need to concern yourself with. They gambled their lives and shot crabs and you need to be more concerned about yourself and the life of your kids should you have any but all in all, they deserve what they got. This is what happens when you decide to sleep around with people you know nothing about. It is sad though...life is too precious to throw away. This is a life long lesson everyone that reads this, everyone that knows who you guys are to stop cheating and stay faithful! It is as bad as people make it out to be. Being with the one you love is priceless and not even time to capture what its value is worth. It hurts to see anyone suffering with such a disease.
10 :
Blood transfusion: Yes, I would stay with him. I would not leave him for that, that would be horrible. If he had cheated, I would have already kicked him to the curb so it's irrelevant.
11 :
Choice number one is VERY UNlikely to happen as all blood has to be screened, but yes I would stay. choice number two would make me run, whether he got infected or not, he cheated, that's a deal breaker.

Why do homophobes accuse gays of HIV/AIDS spreading

Why do homophobes accuse gays of HIV/AIDS spreading?
It's a Sexually Transmitted Disease, not a Homosexually transmitted disease, and heterosexual sexual activity is the common medium for STD's
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered - 14 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
I've never heard that. I've heard that it's just a bunch of w-h-o-r-e-s who spread AIDS. We must be living in different places.
2 :
This is a very good question. When the HIV/AIDS first started going public, it was when gays were not accepted in society at all, let alone how to have safe sex as gays. Since there was no worry of pregnancy, some gays got the reputation of being very promiscuous, not using condoms and stuff. So, obviously, it was spread much easier that way. Now, obviously this is just as true among gay couples as it is straight, but the homophobes are the ones who blame the gays. False blame. In the earlier days they weren't as careful (just as most weren't) but they aren't to blame.
3 :
Um this isn't a question is it?
4 :
In the 70's, everyone believed that gays created and HIV/AIDS. This was, obviously, completely wrong.
5 :
Really? It seems that you don't know how the whole thing started: with some cracker jack pocking a monkey in Africa. Most 'gays" die of AIDS. Get real and get with the program. Unless, of course, you desire your own 4 letters. There is no such thing as a homophobe, just disgusted heteros. How about that, Ru Paul.
6 :
Research and statistics have shown higher rates among the community. It's not accusing, it's fact coming from someone who is personally gay. However, recent headlines hitting the globe and mail clearly state it is becoming common among others as well. Ontario and Saskatchewan have double their rates of infection this past year. Think, there isn't much available for protection among the lesbian community. It's by all means unjust that gays are stereotyped as the main spread, because many become infected with drug use. (shared needles) Edit-Can't believe I have a thumbs down for basing my answer with nothing but facts: THIS ARTICLE WAS MADE JULY 23 WITH NEW STATISTICS, I question the person below claiming to be a doctor. I'm a seventeen year old girl, the rate of aids spread through needles have INCREASED. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/a-changing-epidemic-canadas-aids-rate-on-the-rise/article1648558/
7 :
Because, it is one more thing to hold against us. A while ago (around the 80's) there were quite a few more promiscuous gays. And none of them really used condoms because at the time they weren't worried about getting pregnant and they weren't educated about STD's. Do remember, AIDS was started by men having sex with monkeys in Africa.. no joke. And also remember that heterosexuals would have had to have sex with gay/bi people in order to get the STD.. so they are just as promiscuous. My friend got AIDS by using drugs (sharing needles).. many gays do get AIDS this way because they are stressed, unaccepted, ect ect. Also, some homophobes actually think that we were made in Hell.. so they think that we have nothing better to do then destroy all humans.. this may seem a bit far-fetched but some people are just crazy like that.
8 :
Because it is an excuse to fill their hate against gay people. They have to associate it with something bad.
9 :
It's that damn Tom Hanks' fault!
10 :
Is homophobe another word for f@g, because gays admitted to the spread of AIDS. Even today the rate of promiscuity amony gay men is a 1970's level when many engaging in unprotected sex. It is amazing that the poster has not heard this. In the closet and close-minded too. Excessive sexual promiscuity results in serious medical consequences รข€” indeed, it is a recipe for transmitting disease and generating an epidemic. The HIV/AIDS epidemic has remained a predominantly gay issue in the U.S. primarily because of the greater degree of promiscuity among gays. A study based upon statistics from 1986 through 1990 estimated that 20-year-old gay men had a 50 percent chance of becoming HIV positive by age 55. As of June 2001, nearly 64 percent of men with AIDS were men who have had sex with men. Syphilis is also more common among gay men. The San Francisco Public Health Department recently reported that syphilis among the city's gay and bisexual men was at epidemic levels. According to the San Francisco Chronicle: "Experts believe syphilis is on the rise among gay and bisexual men because they are engaging in unprotected sex with multiple partners, many of whom they met in anonymous situations such as sex clubs, adult bookstores, meetings through the Internet and in bathhouses. The new data will show that in the 93 cases involving gay and bisexual men this year, the group reported having 1,225 sexual partners Hunter, a gay man brought the AIDS virus to America, and that was the gay man who cam ein contact with the monkey in Africa. Heterosexuals and needle sharing, simply means the hetero came in contact with a gay and the needles sharing was with a gay.
11 :
Fact: worlwide (yes there are other countries), hetrosexual spread far out ways srpead in the gay comminity Fact: mother to baby spread is increasing in poorer countries Fact. needle exchange programs limit the spread and do NOT encourage drug usage
12 :
They lack the education and understanding about the disease. They think AIDS and automatically think about gay men. Even though, straight people can get aids, drug users get aids, blood transfusions given to others during the first cases of AIDS, as we know Africa is having a major problem with aids, and it's not because they are all gay, it's because they lack the education about safe sex or because of religious views. Yes! AIDS did start out in monkeys i have been told it was probably caused by a person trialing a vaccine or that somebody killed an infected monkey and the blood got into the killers bloodstream through a wound. but i have been told throughout my life by teachers etc that AIDS was NOT caused by sex between human and monkey. I thought i'd add a link so anyone interested can look it up.
13 :
the majority of cases in the USA and Canada are gay men. therefore they are considered to be the biggest " spreaders" of the disease. ... the information is freely available at the CDC webiste. look up transmission ( spreading it) categories and see which has the highest number..... facts don't lie. http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/topics/surveillance/basic.htm
14 :
because that was accepted as true in the 70,80's /sarcasm on lol aids is from guys sleeping with monkeys? how do you know it wasnt from some chick sleeping with a monkey /sarcasm off

Yes. If I had truly chosen to forgive the affair, then it doesn't matter anymore. Breaking up with someone from contracting HIV from a blood transfusion would be just as bad as breaking up with someone because they have cancer.
3 :
Yes, I would stay with my spouse if they got HIV/AIDS through a blood transfusion. I would take care of him the best that I could, but I would NOT remain with him if he caught the disease by cheating on me... NO-WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

it's not possible for immune system to fight AIDS and HIV right

it's not possible for immune system to fight AIDS and HIV right?
if it's affected with HIV/AIDS then the immunte system is not working anymore right?
STDs - 7 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Right, though there are now medecines to keep people going for many years.
2 :
HIV IS an infection of the immune system. The HIV infects, colonises and reproduces inside immune cells, when it divides it kills the host immune cell. There is an immune response to HIV which generally serves to make the patient worse. The immune system attacks HIV infected cells killing them. In essence the immune system is the means of the destruction of the immune system. Once the immune system is damaged enough, HIV infected patients begin to get serious infections which will eventually lead to that person's death.
3 :
That's not technically true. People who get infected with HIV only develop AIDS after months or years, and that's because the immune system is still trying to fight off the AIDS. When you first get infected, the virus proliferates and the immune system attacks it.The immune response wipes out nearly all of the viruses in an attack that would destroy pretty much every other pathogen, but some are left behind and those viruses continue attacking white blood cells, specifically T helper cells. This slowly starts to compromise your immune system, making you weaker to other infections as time goes on. Until a certain point, though, you won't notice anything wrong, and this phase can last up to 20 years. Eventually, enough of your immune system has been destroyed so it can't keep up with HIV or anything else, and thus patients start developing problems which anyone with a normal immune system wouldn't have any trouble fighting off.
4 :
Correct. It doesn't recognize the virus as harmful and isn't strong enough to attack it.
5 :
When the body is first infected, it does produce antibodies in an attempt to fight HIV. However, over time, HIV destroys the immune system, specifically the cells the body uses to fight infections, and the body becomes vulnerable to all other infections. Once the number of infection fighting cells drops to 200 or below, diagnosis changes from HIV to AIDS. These days, medications can help many people who have HIV live longer, healthier, and increase the amount of time between diagnosis of HIV and diagnosis of AIDS.
6 :
Oh the immune system will fight HIV, but in a lot of cases it will not win. I have friends that have been HIV+ for over 20 years and never have taken any kind of medications. So his system is fighting and in some aspects winning. With the proper use of medications they immune system can do very well for years. But in the long run, HIV will fight the immune system and most of the time the HIV wins.
7 :
AIDS is when your immune system is down, but there is hope for HIV positive people. don't take the medication it is proven to cause AIDS.

Can you get HIV or AIDS by taking a bite of pizza from some who is infected or by drinking alcohol after an in

Can you get HIV or AIDS by taking a bite of pizza from some who is infected or by drinking alcohol after an in
I have a relative who found out a year ago that his wife died of AIDS. They were newly weds & for approximately three years she didnt tell him. He found out when he checked the answering machine & heard the doctor's message telling the mother to get the baby who was 2 yrs old at the time tested. The daughter is four years old now. Her test have been coming back negative and my cousin's test have also been coming back negative. But my concern is for two other relatives one ate a piece of pizza tha he ate off of & the other drank shots of tequila with him out of the same shot glass and tasted a mixed drink of his. I knw the vires affects the CD4+T cells and you do have them in your saliva. Can either of my other two relatives contract the virus if any of his future test come back positive? Also i need to know if a person can not contract HIV/AIDS through an infected person's saliva, why not? You have the T cells in your saliva.
Infectious Diseases - 8 Answers

1 :
No the virus can not live in air. You also can not get it from toliet seats either.
2 :
I think if the person drinking off the infected glass had a cut in their mouth, etc, then you could. But the virus needs to come in contact with blood or internally, so the likliness is very low.
3 :
Aids is via Direct blood meeting with blood say u share a syringe or his blood gets into ure blood threw an open cut or something, Or its sexually transmitted u need to drink like 8 cups of this persons salive before there is a chance of getting aids and i use the word CHANCE
4 :
In general HIV is a blood-borne pathogen and will be contracted by body fluid contact or contact with body fluids and the mucus membranes. The notion of whether HIV is spread through saliva is somewhat controversial, although the majority of medical opinion says that this is not the case. I don't believe that there has been a documented case of transmission via saliva alone.
5 :
According to all the training i received while working at a Hospital, the answere would certainly be absolutly NO. So not to wory - Keep in mind that food even if it was contaminated would go into the stomach of acid - not directly into the blood stream, and Tears Sweat and Saliva don't have the concentration to easily infect you. On the other hand, blood and semen have a great concentration of cells to host viruses
6 :
Hi, you appear to have gotten some already great answers. HIV is only transmitted from blood to blood and is dead within 30seconds from leaving the host( so I was taught in Pathophisiology/Microbiology). The scary one is Hep C, that little bugger stays alive for around seven days outside the host. One of my closest friends has HIV and I will still take a slug of beer after he took on or take a bite of pizza.
7 :
Well... if the person had an open sore in there mouth in which the saliva came into contact with blood it is possible, although not probable. Read: 99% chance it won't happen
8 :
Please read the following site: http://www.dph.sf.ca.us/sfcityclinic/drk/hivaids19.asp My g/f who is HIV positive, and has probably progressed to having an AIDS diagnosis, was intimate with someone after the divorce of her first hubbie. Unprotected. That relationship ended. She found and met her present hubbie. A number of years into their marriage, now with their own 5 year old dgtr, she finds out his has HIV. Unfortunately, so does her daughter, who is now 13. I cry everytime I see them. Mom who is 5'10" can't walk alone. Daughter has dark circles and very gray skin coloring. Please educate your children or any children in your life. If you don't feel knowlegdgeable about teaching abstinence or about having safe sex, take them to someone who is qualified.
