The answer to that right now is 0% There is no cure. The length of time one lives after diagnosis depends on a lot of factors. There are many different strains of HIV/AIDS... Some more virulent than others. Also, yes, it does depend on how soon you are treated, and if you are compliant with meds.

A common question with a complicated answer. To ask the survival rate of HIV/AIDS assumes that someone can "outlive" the virus in their body, i.e. be cured. That people have continued to live for a longer time with it inside them has been attributed to research and the science of medicine as well as understanding and utilizing the other healthful sources of immune strength, such as nutrition, exercise, complimentary care and even a "positive" mental health check-up. It is the knowledge that this virus is working non-stop to usurp and destroy the body's immune (defense) system that emphasizes the survival benefit of early detection and treatment, whether that includes antiretroviral meds or not. Sometimes the toxicity of the combination of treatments over time can do damage that shortens survival. Most times, ignoring the problem is what hurts a person's prognosis the most. I encourage questions on the science of HIV and its destructive power to, when left unchecked, progressively lead a person to an AIDS diagnosis. But leave NO doubt, this is a proven, deadly virus. The citations provided by another respondent are from a single, small but loud, group of people, some with backgrounds in medicine or science that they walked away from long before drawing their present conclusions about HIV. And they themselves have experienced losses among their ranks from untreated HIV infection. Consider those sources and then look at the overwhelming majority of the world's most respected people in these fields who report on their findings every year at conferences like the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI, held this past month in Los Angeles) and the US Conference on AIDS. Go online to the many other sources of information, like thebody.com and aegis.com. Back to the question of survival, all those who are alive with HIV are survivors, for the time being. If they die from anything else, they were survivors. But, can anyone today live longer than the HIV inside their own body? That survival rate is still 0%.
